New Delhi: In an attempt to boost gemstone education in the Indian
jewellery industry, the Gemological Science International (GSI) laboratory, in
association with Bharat Ratnam Mega CFC, conducted a new batch of its “Gem
Identification Masterclass”. The class is aimed at bridging the technical
understanding gap in the coloured gemstone segment.
Bharat Ratnam Mega CFC is an initiative of GJEPC, supported
by India’s commerce ministry. Its partnership with GSI is focused on addressing
the changing market demand in the jewellery industry, the factors influencing
gemstone sourcing, quality evaluation, and customer communication strategies
across the trade.
The masterclass was exclusively designed for industry
professionals and focused on practical gemological training, including gemstone
identification, separation of natural gemstones from simulants and synthetics,
treatment detection, geographic origin analysis, and value-related factors.
Speaking about the masterclass, Ravi Menon, CEO, Bharat
Ratnam Mega CFC, said the gemological sector requires learning and upskilling
to align with the evolving global standards of gemology, and therefore
continuous investments in these directions are a must.
Ramit Kapur, Managing Director, GSI India, noted the
changing scenario for retailers and jewellery experts. He said professionals
are seeking deeper technical understanding as the consumer class is changing
and is more informed than before. Today, they have more queries regarding
gemstones and sourcing practices.
The initiative is expected to add meaningful depth to gemstone education in the jewellery industry, as participants were not limited to theoretical learning but were given hands-on exposure to professional gemological instruments and advanced gemstone analysis techniques under the guidance of GSI instructors.
